Better Care Highlights: • Transitioned ~44,000 sows (67%) to our Advanced Open Sow Housing system and plan to complete full transition by the end of 2021. • Continued to implement remote video auditing (RVA) in our production and processing facilities. • Continued to implement scientifically advanced and humane euthanasia, including controlled atmosphere stunning, in all our fresh poultry facilities as a core element of our fresh poultry strategy. • Implemented h ydraulic-lift pig trailers and climate-controlled poultry trailers that come with temperature and humidity monitoring. Priorities: • Continue to transition all Maple Leaf Foods sows to our Advanced Open Sow Housing system by the end of 2021. • Roll out our digital transportation monitoring system by the end of 2019. • Develop an animal care certification program to be launched by the end of 2019. Better Planet Highlights: • Continue to execute environmental sustainability action plans to drive progress towards our 50% reduction in environmental footprint goal by 2025. • Reduced total energy intensity by 13.5%, electricity intensity by 23.9%, natural gas intensity by 10.6%, water intensity by 16.2%, solid waste intensity by 22.2%, and GHG emissions by 14.3%. • Set science-based targets on GHG emissions reductions in line with the UN Paris Agreement. • Finalized our carbon management strategy and became a carbon neutral company.
